Physical Touch Etiquette in Uganda

Physical touch is usually kept modest in public, so handshakes are the safest greeting and prolonged hugging, back-slapping, or casual touching between people who do not know each other well can feel intrusive. Among close friends and family there is more warmth, but in many settings especially with elders or in conservative communities, it is best to wait for the other person to initiate more familiar contact.
