Physical touch is usually kept modest in public, so handshakes are the safest greeting and lingering hugs, back pats, or casual touching are best avoided unless you know someone well. In more formal or older settings, a respectful handshake and a slight nod are common, while same-sex friends may be more relaxed with brief contact than mixed-gender acquaintances.
