Portugal is generally welcoming and socially inclusive in everyday settings, so travelers should be polite, avoid loud confrontations, and expect mixed-gender groups, LGBTQ+ couples, and people of different backgrounds to be treated with ordinary courtesy in cities and tourist areas. Older attitudes can be more conservative in smaller towns or among older people, but public discrimination is not socially acceptable and most locals value respectful, low-key behavior over making a point about identity.
