Portugal is generally safe for travelers, but in busy tourist areas, on trams, and around train stations you should keep bags zipped and valuables out of sight because pickpocketing is the main everyday risk. Locals are used to a relaxed street atmosphere, so serious crime is uncommon, yet late-night caution in isolated areas and on empty beaches is still sensible.
