Swearing Etiquette in Portugal

Swearing is generally kept casual and private in Portugal, and using strong profanity in public, with strangers, or in front of older people is seen as rude and unnecessarily aggressive. Among close friends, however, mild insults and colorful language can be part of joking banter, especially in relaxed settings like cafés or football conversations, but tone matters more than the exact words.
