Swearing Etiquette in Sri Lanka

Swearing is generally frowned upon in public in Sri Lanka, especially in front of elders, women, or in formal settings, and using strong profanity can quickly be seen as rude or aggressive. In everyday conversation people usually soften criticism with indirect language or humor, while in some communities religious sensibilities make openly vulgar speech even more socially unacceptable.
