Gender Norms Etiquette in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, gender roles are generally traditional in public life, so travelers should dress modestly, avoid overly familiar physical contact, and expect men and women to socialize more formally in many settings. In cities and tourist areas the norms are more relaxed, but in conservative families, temples, and rural communities, women may be expected to cover shoulders and knees and men should be equally restrained in behavior.
