Costa Ricans generally expect people to be polite, non-confrontational, and respectful of different backgrounds, so inclusive language and a warm, friendly tone go a long way in everyday interactions. In cities and tourist areas you will often hear a relaxed, welcoming attitude toward visitors, and it is normal to avoid jokes or comments about ethnicity, gender, religion, or social class that could be seen as rude or divisive.
