Social Hierarchy Etiquette in Costa Rica

Costa Ricans generally expect polite, egalitarian interaction, so it is normal to address people respectfully but not with heavy formality, and to avoid acting superior or overly direct in public. Status differences do exist in workplaces and among older generations, but everyday social life is shaped more by friendliness, modesty, and keeping interactions smooth than by rigid hierarchy.
