Physical touch is usually reserved for people who know each other well, so casual hugging, back-slapping, or touching a stranger’s arm can feel too familiar. Among friends and family, a quick hug or cheek kiss is common, but in formal settings a firm handshake and a bit more personal space are the safer default.
