Greetings are usually warm and polite, with a handshake for first meetings and a kiss on the cheek among people who know each other, while punctuality is expected for business but social plans often start a bit later than scheduled. In conversation, Chileans tend to value respectful formality at first and may use usted until invited to be more familiar, and it is considered courteous to wait to be seated or introduced in homes and restaurants rather than acting very casually.
