Ask before photographing people, especially in favelas, markets, or during religious events, because many Brazilians see unsolicited photos as intrusive or exploitative. In tourist areas people are usually more relaxed, but it is still polite to get a quick nod or gesture first, and some churches, military sites, and private venues may forbid photos altogether.
