Smoking is generally tolerated in public, but you should avoid lighting up in crowded indoor spaces, around elders, and in formal social settings unless others clearly do so first. In cities, people may smoke in bars or outside shops, while in homes it is polite to ask permission and to be discreet rather than making a show of it.
