Public displays of affection are usually kept very modest in China, so holding hands is common but kissing, hugging, or lingering touch in public can draw uncomfortable looks, especially outside big cities. Younger couples in urban areas may be more relaxed, but many people still prefer to show affection privately because restraint is widely seen as polite and mature.
