Physical Touch Etiquette in Uruguay

Physical touch is fairly common in Uruguay, so a handshake, a light hug, or a kiss on the cheek is normal when greeting people you know, especially in social settings. Friends may stand close and touch an arm or shoulder while talking, but with new acquaintances or in formal situations it is better to start with a handshake and let the other person set the level of familiarity.
