Uruguay is generally quite egalitarian, so travelers will see women and men mixing freely in public, sharing meals, and going out together without much formality around gender roles. Traditional machismo still exists in some older or more conservative circles, but it is less socially dominant than in many neighboring countries, and overtly sexist behavior is usually frowned upon.
