Public displays of affection are generally kept very discreet in Turkmenistan, so holding hands may be acceptable in some settings but kissing, hugging, or overtly romantic behavior in public can draw uncomfortable attention. Social norms are conservative and privacy-minded, especially outside the capital and among older generations, so couples usually act reserved in streets, parks, and family spaces.
