Personal Space Etiquette in Turkey

Personal space is generally smaller in Turkey than in Northern Europe or North America, so close conversation, light touches on the arm, and standing nearer than you might expect are normal in everyday interactions. In crowded places and among friends or family, people may sit or stand very close, but in formal settings or with strangers it is still polite to avoid prolonged staring and to respect a bit more distance.
