Gender Norms Etiquette in Turkey

Public life in Turkey is generally mixed and women work, study, and travel freely, but travelers should still expect more conservative expectations in some neighborhoods, small towns, and religious settings, where modest dress and restrained behavior are appreciated. In everyday socializing, men and women may greet with a handshake or a light cheek kiss among acquaintances, yet in more traditional families physical contact between unrelated men and women can be limited, so it is best to follow the lead of the people you are with.
