Smoking is generally tolerated in outdoor public spaces and some bars, but you should avoid lighting up in enclosed places, on public transport, and around elders or in formal social settings unless others do so first. In villages and family compounds, asking permission and stepping away to smoke is the polite norm, and many people will expect you to be discreet rather than make a visible display of it.
