Gender Norms Etiquette in Malawi

Public life in Malawi is still fairly traditional, so travelers should expect men and women to dress modestly and for women to receive more conservative scrutiny in rural areas, especially around bars, markets, and evening socializing. In cities the norms are more relaxed, but public displays of affection and behavior that seems flirtatious or overly assertive can draw attention, and it is best to follow the lead of local families and elders in mixed-gender settings.
