Swearing Etiquette in Japan

Swearing in public is generally avoided in Japan, and even when people are angry they usually keep their language restrained rather than using loud profanity. In everyday conversation, blunt insults or aggressive swearing can come across as very rude and socially immature, so people tend to soften criticism with indirect phrasing or polite forms instead.
