Bargaining Etiquette in Japan

Bargaining is generally not expected in Japan, especially in department stores, chain shops, taxis, and most restaurants, where prices are fixed and trying to haggle can feel awkward or pushy. The main exceptions are flea markets, small independent stalls, and some electronics or secondhand shops, where a very polite request for a discount may be accepted, but it should be done gently and without pressure.
