Physical touch is generally kept minimal in Japan, so avoid casual hugging, back-slapping, or touching someone you do not know well, and use a bow or a small nod instead of a handshake unless the other person initiates it. Among friends or family there can be more warmth, but in public many people still prefer a respectful distance, and even couples often keep affection discreet.
