Meat Etiquette in Japan

Meat is widely eaten in Japan, but it is usually served in modest portions and with careful presentation, so a traveler should expect beef, pork, chicken, and especially seafood to appear in everyday meals rather than oversized meat-heavy plates. Traditional washoku still emphasizes balance and seasonality, and dishes like wagyu or yakitori are often enjoyed as specialties rather than the default center of the meal.
