In India, steady direct eye contact is usually softer and less prolonged than in many Western settings, especially with elders, authority figures, or people you do not know well, because a fixed stare can feel confrontational or disrespectful. In conversation, brief eye contact with occasional glances away is normal, and in some traditional or religious contexts people may lower their gaze as a sign of respect.
