Swearing in public is generally frowned upon in Eritrea, especially in front of elders, officials, or in mixed company, where it can be taken as a sign of poor upbringing or disrespect. In everyday conversation people tend to keep language restrained and indirect, and even strong frustration is usually expressed more quietly than with open profanity.
