Austrians generally prefer a respectful amount of personal space, so keep a comfortable distance in conversation and avoid standing too close, touching strangers, or speaking loudly in public. In crowded trams or shops people may be physically close, but in everyday interactions a calm, reserved manner is normal and direct eye contact is usually fine.
