Public displays of affection are generally kept very discreet in Syria, so holding hands may be seen in some settings but kissing, hugging, or anything more intimate is usually avoided in public. This is especially important in conservative neighborhoods and among older generations, where modest behavior is expected and couples often act more reserved outside the home.
