Tap water is generally safe in the main tourist areas and on Mahé, but many locals and visitors still prefer bottled or filtered water, especially on smaller islands or in older guesthouses. If you are offered water in a home or small restaurant, it is normal to accept it politely, and in hotter weather people often keep a bottle with them because the tropical climate makes dehydration easy.
