A firm handshake and direct eye contact are the normal greeting in Bulgaria, and it is polite to address people formally until invited to use first names. When visiting someone’s home, bring a small gift such as flowers or sweets, and remember that nodding and shaking the head can mean the opposite of what many travelers expect.
