Swearing is fairly common in casual Argentine conversation, especially among friends, and words like
boludo can sound affectionate or joking rather than truly insulting depending on tone and relationship. In public or with strangers, though, strong profanity is still considered rude, and people usually soften it when speaking to elders, in formal settings, or in front of children.
