People in Afghanistan generally stand and sit closer than many Western visitors expect, especially among men, and stepping back can be read as coldness rather than politeness. In mixed company, between unrelated men and women, and around elders or guests, keep interactions modest and avoid prolonged physical contact unless the other person initiates it.
