Public displays of affection are strongly discouraged in Afghanistan, so couples should avoid kissing, hugging, or holding hands in public. Conservative social norms and Islamic values make even casual touch between unrelated men and women sensitive, and in many places same-sex friends may walk together or hold hands without the same romantic meaning.
