Gender Norms Etiquette in Suriname

Suriname is generally relaxed and urban about gender roles, so travelers will see women and men working, socializing, and going out together with little expectation that one gender should stay in a strictly traditional role. In more conservative families and some religious communities, however, older expectations about modest dress, deference to elders, and who speaks first in formal settings can still matter, especially outside Paramaribo.
