In public, keep your voice moderate, respect personal space, and avoid loud arguments or overt displays of anger, especially in shops, taxis, and on public transport. South Africans are generally friendly and informal, but courtesy matters: greet people before asking for help, and in some communities a handshake or brief exchange of pleasantries is expected before getting down to business.
