Bargaining Etiquette in South Africa

Bargaining is normal at informal markets, craft stalls, and when buying secondhand goods, but it is usually not expected in malls, supermarkets, or fixed-price shops. A friendly, light negotiation is common in tourist areas and township markets, where sellers may start high and expect a counteroffer, but keep it polite and avoid pushing too hard if the price is already clearly marked.
