Public displays of affection are generally acceptable in South Africa, especially in cities and among younger people, but it is still best to keep things modest rather than overly passionate in public. In more conservative or rural settings, and around older people or religious communities, holding hands or a quick kiss is usually fine while prolonged hugging or heavy kissing can draw disapproval.
