Coffee & Tea Etiquette in Mali

Tea is the more social drink in Mali, and it is common to be offered three rounds of strong green tea rather than coffee when visiting someone or lingering in a shop. The tea ritual, often called ataya, is a slow, hospitable practice shared with friends and guests, and refusing the first cup can seem unfriendly unless you have a clear reason.
