Bargaining is generally limited to souvenir stalls, local markets, and informal taxi or boat arrangements, while prices in hotels, restaurants, and most shops are usually fixed. In Malé and on resort islands, haggling is often mild and polite rather than aggressive, and a friendly smile with a soft counteroffer is more typical than hard negotiation.
