Physical touch is fairly common in Israel among friends, family, and even new acquaintances, so a handshake, a pat on the shoulder, or a brief hug is usually normal rather than intrusive. People tend to stand closer and speak more directly than in many countries, but it is still best to read the other person’s comfort level, especially in more religious or formal settings where same-gender greetings may be preferred.
