Smoking is common and generally tolerated in many public settings in Indonesia, but you should still look for no-smoking signs and avoid lighting up in offices, malls, public transport, and other enclosed spaces. In more traditional or family settings, especially around elders or during meals, it is polite to ask first and step aside if people seem uncomfortable, since courtesy matters more than strict formality.
