Tuvaluan society is generally conservative, so visitors should dress modestly and avoid public displays of affection, especially in villages and around churches or community gatherings. Men and women both take part in daily life, but older family and church leaders are respected, and local customs can be more traditional on outer islands than in Funafuti.
