Gender Norms Etiquette in Ivory Coast

In Ivory Coast, gender roles are still fairly traditional in many families, so men are often expected to take the lead in public interactions while women may be more reserved in mixed company, especially outside Abidjan. In urban areas and among younger people these expectations are loosening, but it is still wise to be polite and avoid assuming that casual physical contact or overly direct comments will be equally comfortable for everyone.
