In France, personal space is usually smaller than in more reserved cultures, so brief proximity, light touches on the arm, and standing fairly close in conversation are normal rather than intrusive. In shops, cafés, and on public transport, people may be physically near each other without much fuss, but it is still polite to avoid staring, crowding, or speaking too loudly.
