People in Bhutan generally keep a respectful amount of personal space and avoid overly familiar touching, especially with strangers, elders, or in formal settings. In crowded markets or on buses people may stand close out of necessity, but a calm, reserved manner is preferred and public displays of affection are usually kept very discreet.
