Smoking is generally allowed in many outdoor public places, but you should avoid lighting up in enclosed public spaces, on public transport, and in restaurants or bars unless a clearly marked smoking area exists. In practice, people are fairly relaxed about smoking on sidewalks or outside venues, yet it is still polite to ask before smoking near others, especially in family settings or around children.
