Smoking is generally tolerated only in designated smoking areas, and lighting up on sidewalks, near building entrances, bus stops, or inside most indoor public places can draw disapproval or a fine. In practice, many office workers and men still smoke socially outside in marked spots or convenience-store areas, but you should always look for ashtrays or posted signs before smoking.
