Tattoos are generally uncommon and can draw curious looks, especially among older people or in more traditional communities, so it is best not to assume they are widely accepted everywhere. In Freetown and among younger urban residents they are more visible and usually tolerated, but visible body art may still be read as a sign of foreign influence or a very modern lifestyle rather than a mainstream norm.
