Public displays of affection are usually kept modest in Romania, so holding hands or a quick kiss is generally fine, but prolonged hugging, heavy kissing, or overtly sexual behavior in public can draw uncomfortable looks, especially outside nightlife areas. Older generations and smaller towns tend to be more reserved, while in Bucharest and other big cities people are more relaxed, though discretion is still the safer norm.
